A few days ago, a cardinal was trapped inside our screen porch. I watched the bird fly back and forth from one side to the other side, doing the same thing each time. I can only imagine this going through its mind:
“OK, I’m going to fly over there and see if I get out. Nope, OK then I’m flying back over there and see if anything has changed. Nope, OK now I’m going back to over there. Nope. Dammit! OK, maybe if I changed my attitude. I’m just not positive enough. Believe it and you will achieve it! OK here we go. CRAP! OK, now going back…”
Each time the bird flew right past the open door that would lead to freedom and not once did it slow down to inspect this alternative. We were able to rescue the bird; however, I’m convinced had we not been there, it would have died doing the same thing over and over and over.
